Walking in the light

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

I thought it was time for another real story from my past: "If you walk in the light …”

When I was a young teenager, I used to catch the 9.55pm bus home from band practice each Monday & Friday evening. As I got near my house I had two options, get off at the end of my road and walk back up it or get off one stop earlier and take the short cut up Hacks Drive. It was an unmade road with hedges and fences running up the drive for about 75 metres then it opened up to a bit of scrap land on the right and a farmers’ field on the left with a five bar gate. There were no street lights so the further you went up the drive the less effect the lights from the main road had and the more nervousI became. I always worried that there might be someone waiting at the end of the garden fence to jump out on me.

One autumn evening as it was getting dusk, I decided to take the short cut and as usual, my heart rate increased as I got near to the end of the fence and the waste land. As I reached that crucial point, a gun went off behind me, I turned round and suddenly bodies came running into the drive silhouetted by the main road lights. At which point I ‘legged it’ up the unmade road and indoors as fast as my legs would take me – Usain Bolt would not have caught me!

A few seconds later, my brother and his friends came bursting into the house, laden with cabbages and strawberries – they had been scrumping in the farmers’ field and he had taken a pot shot at them! Now at 10 in the morning I had no issues going along Hacks Drive but 10 at night was a different proposition – it was months before I got off the bus one stop early to take that short cut!

John 8:12 Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."

Footnote: About a year ago, Janice and I were in Thundersley and drove past Hacks Drive, It was around 10 o'clock and I decided to stop and walk up that still, unmade road. As soon as I got out of the street lights, the same feeling of apprehension flooded back and I didn't stay long in the shadows. God doesn't want us to be in the shadows, but walking in the light
